The renovation opens the ground level of a three-storey building to Richmond Street, creating a dynamic illuminated nightly presence. A transparent glass foyer, bar and ticket counter angled to the sidewalk and street, gives a lyrical sense of movement to an essentially rectangular space. Beyond the front lobby is the performance hall with seating for 180 people.
The renovation relies on simple materials, forms, and placement to create a feeling of performance within a strict construction budget.
The Music Gallery was awarded with a 1994 OAA Design Excellence Award and has been published in Canadian Architect and the Globe & Mail.
